social work

Stydi ry is a student association for the social work students at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki. Stydi organizes work life excursions, takes care of social work students’ study affairs and brings students together by hosting relaxed social evenings. Everyone at the Faculty of Social Sciences are welcome to Stydi’s events!

Social work is an academic discipline and a practice-based profession which deals with preventing and resolving social problems and enhancing overall well-being and social functioning. Social workers work with individuals, families, groups and communities and support them, act as advocates and direct people to the services. Social work is often done in extensive and multi-disciplinary networks with other professionals. Main research subjects in social work are e.g. social policies and services, poverty and inequality, childhood and youth, child protection, ageing, immigration and various minorities. Crucial principles in social work are social justice and human rights. One important principle in social work is also creating larger social change in the society.

Besides the work with clients social work studies provide an excellent basis for working as a consultant for organizations, municipalities, the state and the private sector for expert assignments requiring expertise in social sciences. Studies also provide a brilliant basis to work as a teacher and researcher at the university.

Stydi co-operates with other student associations to provide the best possible activities for its members. Increasing the value and visibility of social work in the society is one of Stydi’s aims. Of course, Stydi also hosts fun get-togethers, sports and cultural excursions and offers an opportunity to hang out with other students.

If you are interested in social work themes and/or studies or if you just want to have a good time in a great company, you are warmly welcome to our events!
